As I was perusing the Aircraft Resource Center (ARC) web site, I noticed a story about a group of American G.I.s that took over one of Sadaam’s former palaces and converted it to the Baghdad Hobby Club, where the men and women of our armed forces can find respite from the dangers and boredom of serving in Iraq and build a model or two.

My first thought was “How Cool!” “What a great use of a former dictator’s digs!”

My second thought was to rally the IPMS Denver troops to send a care package to the Baghdad Hobby Club. The call went out to the members and in less than a week we had enough kits and supplies to make a hobby shop proud.

We then approached Colpar Hobbies – one of our favorite places to shop for models, books, decals and hobby supplies to see if they had a few supplies to donate. (For those that have not been to Colpar – imagine one of the biggest hobby shops in the country stocked with all the latest and greatest). Fred and the rest of the Colpar crew not only gave a very generous amount of kits, acrylic paints, hobby knives, and other general supplies, they went one step further and asked me to relay to the troops that they would offer a 15 % discount on all items ordered by our guys and gals in Iraq! Truly inspiring.

In all we sent a HUGE Dell Computer box full of hobby items. There were 30 models of varying subjects, scales and degrees of difficulty, military and automotive acrylic paint sets, brushes, knives and other various hobby sundries. All kits were individually wrapped and the supplies were sealed in freezer bags to ensure against breakage. To our extreme delight the package arrived about a week later fully intact, and we received a very nice “thank you” note to IPMS Denver and Colpar Hobbies accompanied with a group photo of the members who were present when the packaged was opened. Great stuff!

We are not the first, nor the last to send hobby items to the troops overseas. It is hoped by highlighting the efforts of the Denver club, other IPMS chapters and hobby shops will follow suit and our brothers-and-sisters-in-arms can have a little bit of “home” with them in the form of building models.

Also drop an email to Colpar Hobbies and tell them “THANKS!”  They probably don’t care about the attention, but I think a “cudos” is well deserved.

Our best wishes and prayers go out to everyone serving in Iraq and in harms way.
