AFV Modeller Magazine #20

Since I saw my first issue of AFV Magazine at the Chicago Nationals, I have always looked forward to the next issue.  It is high quality with nearly every bit of it in color.  Normally, the only black and white pages are original photographs.  And, best of all, the only advertising is done by the magazine itself on the back cover of the magazine.

Issue 20 is 66 pages total, with articles on  a cougar which served in Bosnia, Prague 1968 and the model it inspired, the M103 tank family, the Firefly VC and Euro Militaire.

It’s really hard to say that there is a “main article”, because there are three articles which are extensive.  The cover shows Ulf Anderson’ Tamiya T-55 in a display which was inspired by pictures from Operation Danube in Prague, Czechoslovakia in August 1968.  A Blast Models update set, some Eduard photo etch and aluminum barrel and some Fruilmodellismo tracks, and he was in business.  The T-55 is a very basic m58 version, which was very austere.  Mr. Anderson replicated a section of cobblestone street and trolley tracks as the base for the display and chose to have the vehicle be the victim of vandalism by an unhappy Czech.  This particular citizen chose to show his displeasure of being invaded by throwing a bucket of red paint on the turret of the invader’s T-55.  This makes for a very unique model and its presentation.  The follow-on article on Operation Danube by Marek Solar shows a photograph of a T-55 splattered with paint and is occupie4d by a highly perturbed civilian.

The Cougar build article by Jason Bobrowich uses a Hobby Fan Canadian 6x6 Cougar AVGP and some parts pirated from an AFV Club Scorpion to model the vehicle he commanded in Bosnia in 1994.  The results of his efforts are really great  He uses the crew figures from the Academy IDF kit, modified to depict Canadian flak jackets, to finish off the model.

Bryan Gray’s Firefly VC depicts a representation of the 28th Armored Regiment, 4th Canadian Armored Brigade on April 4th, 1945 in Holland.  He utilizes DML’s third release of the Firefly, along with a Formation’s update, Aber photo etch and RHPS British steel chevron tracks.  Mr. Gray displays his model on a cobblestone base and has three crewmen plus two infantry figures showing the tank approaching  a Bailey bridge.  Another great build article.

Once again AFV magazine has put out an issue with some great articles, and four pages of new releases on the horizon.  The magazine is pricey, and it only comes out six times per year, but to me, it’s worth it due to the combination of modeling and actual vehicle pictures.

Thanks to John Noack for allowing me to review the magazine.
