Modeling the Jagdpanzer 38(t) 'Hetzer'

Osprey makes another splash hit with their Modeling the Hetzer tome.  I have always been very fond of the Hetzer.  Even though it is small in overall size and definitely under-gunned, it just looks neat.  I think it’s small size and all around sloped armor that catches the eye and draws you to it.

The book is 80 pages long and, once again, filled with numerous before, during and after color photographs.  All the photographs are of exceptional quality.  The 80 pages consist of an introduction, materials needed for basic and advanced model building, Hetzer information, museums of note, available kits (plastic and conversions), and a color chip reference chart.

Gary Edmundson (author and builder of all four reviewed models) deserves major kudos.  The book is well written and his model building skills are incredible.  On page 30, there is a photo of the lower interior that looks like the top of the Hetzer was ripped off and a photographer jumped in and snapped the shot.  It was very incredible work applied here.

The four Hetzer’s that are reviewed are a 1944 BMM Hetzer, a 1945 Skoda produced machine, a15cm Schweres Infanteriegeschutz 33/2 (Sf) auf Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer and a Bergepanzer 38(t).  The Bergepanzer is my personal favorite.  Unfortunately, less time and photographs are spent on the actual model as the purpose of the build was to demonstrate a vehicle in a dioramic setting.

This book is a must have for any Hetzer freak.  Osprey continues to offer great model building volumes on interesting subjects.  My only complaint again is the expensive aftermarket products that are used in the construction of these kits.  For those of us that can afford it, it is great.  However, that beginning modeler is not likely to be able to afford the $30.00 kit and then another $25.00 to $100.00 for the amount of after market accessories.
