This book is an interesting one-volume reference on armored units of the German Army (Heer) during WWII. (Note that it does not cover the Waffen SS.) The text and captions are written in both French and English. There are many b/w photos, mostly from the early stages of the war and 32 pages of color photos and illustrations of tactical symbols.

Panzertruppen is divided into three parts. The first part is entitled “The Commanders” and includes a brief biography and photo of every German officer who was a divisional commander or higher of panzer troops. There are also 5 pages illustrating and describing the various levels of Knights Cross and German Cross medals and the Panzer Assault Badge. The second part, “Panzer Gruppen/Panzer Armeen,” give a short unit history of every armored division, corps and army, including motorized and light divisions. Illustrations show the tactical symbols used by each of these units. The third section, “Reportages,” consists of 60 pages of captioned photos. As stated previously, most of the photos are from the early war years.

The book contains lots of interesting historical information on German armored units and their commanders. In addition, the photos will be very beneficial for detailing armor models. Some of them just beg to be reproduced in a diorama! One of my favorites is on p. 258—it shows a motorcyclist catching some sleep while leaning back over the grill of a truck. You would have to be exhausted to sleep in that position! I hope Heimdal publishes a similar book on Waffen SS panzer troops.
