This book provides a photo history of the Artillery Regiment 1 of the 1st Waffen SS Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler (LAH), written by the grandson of one of its veterans.  This elite unit was used in some of the hardest combat throughout the war and helped write the book on the use of modern artillery (it isn’t just safe rear area support – there were close range battles where each artillery piece was fired horizontally).  The many campaigns are chronologically presented, from the Western Campaign, Balkans, Russia, Italy, the Invasion Front including Falaise, Ardennes and back to the Eastern Front with concise text (often quoting participants) and hundreds of photos.

While this isn’t a “camo and markings book”, the modeler will discover details in the period photos, mostly published for the first time.  From the early light howitzers to the 88s, the artillery regiment’s equipment was constantly upgraded and the photos show details, markings (like a LAH insignia on an lFH 18 howitzer) and diorama ideas.  Vehicles are covered too, including a rare Kfz. 4 BMW truck with a twin mg34 a.a. mount, camouflaged Wespes and Hummels, Pz III obs tanks, Nebelwerfers and more.  Uniforms cover a lot of ground as photos include men in every theater and every climate.

This book is recommended for history buffs and modelers for its thorough, historical photo-coverage of the SS Panzer Artillery Regiment 1 Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler (LAH).   It is available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 4880 Lower Valley Rd., Atglen, Pa. 19310 www.schifferbooks.com or better hobby shops and bookstores.  Many thanks to Schiffer Publishing for the review copy.
