As I suggested in my earlier review of the Tamiya F-14A, I
held off on construction of this project until the Black Box “Combat
Series:” cockpit set became available, and I can honestly say that it was
well worth the wait. The resin castings are crisp
and free of flash, relatively free of pinholes and when painted give this
kit the lift that it so desperately needed. As the images show, this set
gives dimension to the pure flat plastic with decals applied that is
supplied in the kit. |

Fit is fair to good, requiring only minor trimming and
sanding. (It has been this builders experience with Black Box that they
will run hot or cold in this area, the F-14 leaning toward the positive.)
Although I like the final appearance of the seats, side and back panels
and consoles, it would have been my preference to use the photo film
“sandwiched” style instrument panel and gauges that other resin after
marketers offer, although this offering is adequate.
Bottomline… it looks good, albeit a little pricey. When it
comes to the big F-14, it’s not the only game in town, but its by far the
best. |
