In the last couple of years, Eduard Model Accessories of the Czech Republic have started adding color to some of their Photo Etched metal accessory sets.  I first encountered one of their products when I was asked to review a set designed for the A5M-5c Zero – see IPMS Journal November/December 2002.  The parts looked so good, especially the seat belts, that I checked Squadron Shop to see what other sets were available in 1/72 scale.  I have found six sets of World War II style belts and have been using them in subsequent models.  The sets are;

73-001 Imperial Japanese Army and Navy

73-002 Luftwaffe Fighters

73-003 Luftwaffe Bombers

73-004 US Army Air Corps and Navy

73-005 Royal Air Force

73-006 Royal Air Force – Q Style

You will note from the photos that the parts are produced in the proper colors to represent the different belts, buckles, leather pads, cables etc.  In most cases, the modeler can see stitching and buckle holes in the belts.  A minor problem is that the color is limited to the front side of the belts with the backside remaining bare metal.  In case the backside of the belt may be visible, the modeler must add a bit of paint.  I have not found this to be necessary.

I am able to bend the photo-etched parts as needed to drape over the seats without problems.  I have found the color to be permanent and flexible and the detail of the parts is very good and much better than I could paint.  Until now, I had previously been using painted lead foil with added photo etched buckles for seat belts but this product makes the model look better and is easier to use.

I build only 1/72-scale models but I checked the Eduard web site and it looks like 1/48-scale modelers have even more variety.  Recent new products from Eduard have become more expensive and these products are not exceptions however I feel that the cost is worth the benefit that is added to the model.  This is one of those new products that make the modeler’s life easier and his models look better.  Well recommended.
