SDV Model, a family run business in the Czech Republic since 1989, has produced a line of HO scale (1/87) AFVs in a limited run (1000 copies apiece) fashion.  Specializing in HO scale models aimed at the gaming and Model Railroad enthusiasts, their inventory ranges from numerous military to civilian vehicles to structures.  The focus of this article will be the BMP 1 armored infantry vehicle.

The box this kit arrived in was a fairly standard lid-type box, exactly like the Marder III I reviewed from this company.  Upon opening it, I saw that the kit was loosely packaged in a single, clear plastic bag which was free to slide around the box during transport.  The kit consists of 52 pieces on 6 sprues of dark green plastic, and my sample had 4 loose pieces.  There is a great deal of flash on the majority of my sample’s parts, and one must wonder if this particular kit came near the end of the 1000-item production run.  The flash ranges in thickness, and there is a lot of it.  A great deal of cleanup will be required.  The level of detail on this HO scale AFV is nicely represented, but as with the Marder III, some of it seems a bit much in thickness and size.

The instructions are printed on one sheet 8.5 x 11” paper, folded into fourths.  Another, similar sheet provides the painting schematics, although no specific paints are specified outside of Light Green, Dark green, and Grey-Green.  They appear to be copies of an original sheet, and assembly diagrams are black and white sketches of the model in logical progression order.  They are vague with regards to exact location of numerous pieces.  A brief historical profile on the front of the instructions page is written in Czech and English.  This is repeated on the flip-side of the “painting guide”.

The decal sheet contains options for 5 BMPs, and appears to be in very nice register.  Interestingly, the hull stencils are a 1 piece affair, and careful trimming will be required for using individual numerals.

All in all, a fair amount of work will be required to complete this kit, the majority of it involving careful parts clean-up.  Considering the price, I can recommend this kit to small-armor enthusiasts with some experience working with limited run kits.

My thanks to John Noack, 1st VP IPMS/USA, and SDV Model for the review sample!
