The author is obviously over the edge on these airplanes - not that this is a bad thing. It's AMS in a historical vein. Although this is a Datafiles publication of a mere 32 pages, I'd put money on the suggestion that it is THE source for the real skinny on the SAML. Mr Alegi manages to pack a tremendous amount of information about the type in general and airplanes in specific along with a plethora of very nice photographs. The requisite 1/72 and 1/48 scale drawings are included, along with a warning to not copy them. Ever. Anyway. No how. Just don't. You've been warned. Also included is a period - it seems - set of drawings of fuselage art. Regrettably in black and white, but interesting none the less. Another neat addition is illustration #62 which is a wartime drawing or print of the cockpit and observer's station interiors. This airplane had a steering wheel. Very avant-garde. But, Murphy must also be Italian because this thing is cursed with a large, box-shaped radiator mounted square on top of the valve covers and beneath the upper wing. Aerodynamically poisonous, and completely blocking the pilot's forward view. Or, so the photos would indicate. They obviously managed to cope. Interestingly, the color renditions of the aircraft show a considerable amount of daylight between the radiator and the valve rockers, but the photos don't bear this out. Although this Datafile covers another odd-ball airplane, it does so in a thoroughly professional and historically complete and interesting manner. Very nicely done. |
