If you enjoy armor modeling, you’ll enjoy AFV Modeller.  Though published in the U.K., this particular issue’s six articles have contributors from six nations, plus a nine page Part 2 photo essay coverage of truly international Euro Militaire 2005.  The six page “Keeping Track” section shows and tells you what’s new in this world of modeling from 1/144 to 1/35.  One thing I found inside AFV Modeller was a wealth of photos illustrating each article, whether it was the modeler’s methods to awesomely weather a camouflage patterned 1/35 T-34 vignette with groundwork and wooden church or a 1/72 Tiger II’s pattern applied with Play-Doh.  While some articles make it crystal clear how they created their effects, others simply show you the finished result from multiple angles, like the diorama of the U.S. Army squad and the knocked out Stug.  Another article improves upon a Tamiya Iraqi T-55 with aftermarket parts and weathering.  The final model building article scratch builds a Swedish CV9040C you’re not likely to see in an American modeling magazine plus there’s a four page spread of Xtreme detail photos of an actual German MG151 Drilling.

The Euro Militaire article deserves additional comment as it provides more show coverage than I’m accustomed to from most magazines. There’s 1 1/3 page on Douglas Lee’s “Bloody Colonials” diorama and though there’s nothing like seeing it or the other models in person, the multiple photos are a next best thing – and your airfare savings more than cover a subscription.  Fortunately, Doug Lee’s work can be seen in some U.S. shows but most the other models, diorama and vignettes won’t.  Each featured piece left me inspired with either a modeling technique or an animated way of displaying a model.  Last, I should point out that there are only two pages of advertising, specifically of products available from AFV Modeller.

At $16.75 per issue or £48.30 per year subscription you’re getting a modeling magazine for your money, not a collection of ads.  It’s available in most hobby shops, or in the United States from Wise Owl Worldwide Publications www.wiseowlmagazines.com; 760-603-9768, or direct from AFV Modeller Ltd., 176 Newbridge St., Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 2TE. Tel: (UK) 0191 209 1107 website www.afvmodeller.com.  Many thanks to AFV Modeller for the review copy.
