In its continuation of the Expert Model Craft videos series, Compendium Films’ newest title is Accurate Model AFV detailing. The host is Angus Creighton. The DVD follows the same layout as the previous set with the following information broken down into very nicely separated chapters:
  • Main Program: hull preparation, texturing steel, Zimmerit, smaller details, wheels and tracks.
  • Profile of Modeler.
  • Alternate Zimmerit Finishes.
  • List of products used or recommended.
  • References and sources.
  • A detailed index for easy navigation.
The DVD progresses as normal kit construction does with research and hull preparation. Creighton shows the way to plug holes in the hull using rod and super glue. There is an excellent program on replicating weld seams using a Pyrogravure (a soldering iron with better control and smaller tip). The DVD is very specific and shows excellent detail on replicating the seams. This is followed with examples of simulating a textured steel finish to duplicate the process by which the steel on the real vehicles were rolled. A very nice part of this is that the builder shows some of the common errors that can turn a nicely model into a toy by overdoing the pitting.

Creighton also describes several methods and techniques for adding Zimmerit and spends a fair amount of time on showing his research. Smaller details are covered like adding weld seams to periscope covers, adding casting numbers to parts and making brackets.

The last large section deals with road wheels and tracks. Methods are shown for all common kinds of tracks such as Dragon EZ tracks, kit tracks and white metal Friulmodellisimo.. Road wheels are discussed along with techniques to properly damage the rubber on the wheels and how this damage varied by theater.

This is a great primer and adding those details that will either satisfy you more or really impress judges. There is a nice montage of finished kits and they are stunning. This is highly recommended to intermediate modelers who want to take that next step up.

Thanks to Compendium Films, Tara Lichterman and Casemate Publishing for the chance to review this great instructional video.
