Overview: Being an eager newcomer to armor modeling, I am very excited to have the opportunity to review this title. Coming from a figure painting background into a new medium is a daunting challenge, and any aid which shows new techniques is always most welcome.

The DVD comes in a standard case with nice, color artwork, and an index listing features on the back of the DVD. Total runtime of the DVD is approximately 85 minutes.

DVD special feature include:
  • Profile of Graham Dunbar Brown
  • Model Panorama
  • Correcting common mistakes
  • List of recommended products
  • Reference and sources
From the main menu one can watch the entire presentation (56 minutes total runtime), select from the chapters index, or watch the special features the DVD.

The main feature of the DVD is the build progression of Dragon Models' 1/35 scale Jagdtiger. There is a brief introduction by terrain modeling master, Richard Windrow, and then it is on with the show, as Graham Dunbar Brown begins his step by step tutorial of the project.

This DVD is clearly targeted at the beginning to intermediate modeler, and Mr. Brown does a fine job of explaining each technique as he progresses step by step. He also adds a nice bit of relevant historical information as he works, which makes watching the build all the more enjoyable, since there are no awkward silences. Each step is clearly explained and shown in real time as the technique is carried out. This is one great advantage that video has over the book format. Seeing a thing done in real time is so much more informative… I know as a beginner, I often find progression photographs in periodicals and books woefully lacking, or altogether incomplete. With video, the modeler can watch the technique from start to finish, and listen to the dialogue describing the technique.

While each modeler will eventually desire to build models in their own way, it is clear that Mr. Brown has endeavored to progress though the build using the most logical sequence, and this will be especially advantageous to the beginning modeler, who may be overwhelmed by the whole process.

Of particular interest to AFV modelers will be the sections on battle damage, track assembly/weathering, camouflage, and painting/weathering of the vehicle. While some are brief, they are good primers on "what to do," and certainly, armed with the techniques shown, the modeler can tailor and add to the presented techniques as he sees fit.

As mentioned earlier, while the build follows a logical progression, some things are glanced over, which beginning and intermediate modelers may desire to know more about. For instance, Mr. Brown shows the road wheel and track assembly, but does not mention the suspension assembly. There is also no mention of the upper hull construction at all, save for the application of the tow cables (after painting). Mr. Brown also makes extensive use of his airbrush throughout, but there is no mention of the airflow PSI used, the type of tip, nozzle, needle, etc. Beginners and intermediate modelers will likely be very interested in these things!

Conclusion: This is a very well done DVD. The video and sound quality of the DVD is very good, as is the camera work. In just a few instances the lighting is a bit dark, and some of the work is not easily seen, but this is likely due to the inherent problems with shifting light, as Mr. Brown's hands pass around the model as he works.

While the title specifies "German Armor," these techniques can certainly be used for any type of armor modeling. Mr. Brown does a fine job of explaining his techniques, the choices that he has made, and the products he has used. The camera work and sound quality compliment this all in a fine manner. I would definitely recommend this DVD to any beginner, or intermediate modeler, and further, I would highly recommend this DVD to IPMS model clubs/chapters. It could be used right along with the "ABCs of Modeling" program for new members. It is sure to impart good, useful techniques and information, and also inspire those with an interest in improving their modeling.
