This 72-page book is the first volume author Frank V. De Sisto has issued covering the Sturmgeschutz III, an important piece of armor used by the German Army in WWII. The Sturmgeschutz III was developed in 1936 to meet Erich von Manstein's concept of a heavy infantry support weapon. It proved to be a very effective weapon in this role and a powerful tank killer on the eastern front.

Mr. De Sisto begins his book with an introduction. He gives us some insight into the Sturmgeschutz III's conception and a brief description of its development. He discusses in detail several of the models and variants built between 1939 and 1945. There is a section on unit organization and how the Sturmgeschultz IIIs fit into the German battalion units at different times during the war.

The remainder of the book consists of black and white photographs and color plates. There are approximately 173 black and white photographs depicting the Sturmgeschultz III at rest, maneuvering, in battle and knocked out of action. The text accompanying each photograph adds meaningful information to the scene depicted. As in other books from Concord Publications, none of the gore of war is shown in the photographs.

In the center of the book are eight pages of color drawings provided by Laurent Lecocq. These illustrate 16 different Sturmgeschultz IIIs from various units and locations. Accompanying each drawing is a description of the color schemes, camouflage, and unit markings.

This book is an excellent resource document. I strongly recommend it to the modeler who is thinking of building this piece of armor. The many pictures can provide inspiration to the modeler who is interested in building dioramas. Finally, it is simply an interesting read for the student of military history. The Sturmgeschultz III is a popular item as there are several models, decal sets, and accessories available.
