I had never even seen any publications by Andrea Press but I was familiar with their figures. They are superb, so I wasn't surprised to see that their books meet up with their high standards.

This book about painting horses is a wonderful publication. In my many years of painting miniatures, horses were my favorite thing to paint. The painting of horses is an art form unto itself and many wonderful artists shy away from doing them.

The Painting Horses book takes the mystery out of how to paint them. It is printed on excellent glossy paper in full color. The color illustrations are very precise and sharp and leave nothing out.

It is not just about painting horses but chapters give the horse in history and at war, the morphology of the horse, and even the breeds of horses. Of course, all of this is in wonderful color.

The actual painting is outlined in full detail explaining how to paint with an airbrush, how to paint with oils and how to paint in acrylics. These step by step instructions show you not only the base colors but also the shadows and highlights and how to apply them.

The final chapters show how to paint the saddles for different periods and how to convert the horses' poses. As a guide there is even a chapter on horse movement to help with any conversions you may want to accomplish.

Overall I would highly recommend this book to any miniature painter. It answers all the questions on painting in a clear and concise manner. Some may consider the MSRP of $37.00 too high but I feel that it is worth every cent.

I wish to thank Andrea Press for supplying this review copy and to John Noack for giving it to me for review.
