Once again, Model Art lives up to its ambitious name. In this issue, the main focus is on submarines that carried airplanes, and the airplanes they carried, specifically the I-400 sub and the Aichi M6A Seiran/Nanzan. For the I-400, the new Tamiya 1/350th scale model is reviewed, with attention given as well to the Pit Road 1/700th scale kit of the same subject. There is also a review article of I-400's slightly smaller stablemate, the I-13, as a Pit Road 1/350th scale kit. The cover's piece de resistance is a 1/72nd scale scratchbuilt I-400 superstructure diorama, complete with two Seiran planes in differing stages of deployment.

For the Seiran, the Tamiya 1/72nd and 1/48th scale kits are reviewed as build ups, plus there are photographs of the Smithsonian's example, and six pages of color detail paintings.

For the usual department articles we have:
  • A test shot of the new Hasegawa Nagato-class battleship in 1/350th scale
  • News about Fine Molds' upcoming 1/35th 1936 pattern Toyota G1 pickup truck
  • A review/diorama project of Cyber-Hobby's 1/35th Panzer II Ausf F tank
  • Coverage of two modeling contests in Japan, one hosted by Pit Road and another by Tamiya
  • Excerpts from Model Art's new book on the Japanese ship model industry and their history
  • An article on converting Academy's 1/48th T-33A Shooting Star to the version used by the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force
  • "
  • A build of Tamiya's 1/32nd RF-4EJ Phantom II reconnaissance version
  • A review of Hasegawa's 1/72nd Junkers Ju88C-6 night-fighter
  • A review of Anigrand's 1/72nd Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport jet
  • A build of Tamiya's 1/12th Kawasaki Ninja ZX-RR racing motorcycle
  • A new kit review of Pit Road's 1/144th Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) No. 1 Class-with a bevy of photos from the real thing!
  • A build of a resin 1/43rd Pininfarina Ferrari Rossa sports car
  • A build of Fujimi's 1/72nd Yokosuka E14Y1 ("Glen") floatplane
  • New Products! Fujimi has a nice Japanese-style building in 1/100th that might become popular with diorama builders and wargamers…and a 1/32nd Canter 2-Ton truck that also looks very impressive. Dozens of reissues from Hasegawa, Dragon and MicroAce. New warship and car kits from Aoshima. Plentiful decals and detail sets.
  • Reader letters, calendar of upcoming events, showcase of reader-built models
All this in 158 pages. Of course, it's all in Japanese language, but that doesn't mean it's any less interesting! Thanks go to Mr. Ida of Model Art and IPMS/USA for my review copy.
