As the featured modeler in the Master Class Model Building Videos series, I have learned a thing or two about producing modeling videos in the last few years. So, it is with some degree of authority, that I can state that “Realistic Armor Finishing Techniques” is an excellent addition to the available library of how-to modeling DVDs. The program features the marvelous work of Marcus Nicholls, Editor of Tamiya Model Magazine. Of course, this title will be of considerable interest to all armor modelers, but I would recommend it to modelers of any sort of military related subjects. Many of the techniques demonstrated in this DVD are directly applicable to many different types of models. I think this DVD would be immensely valuable to anyone seeking to apply realistic weathering to a model airplane.

On the technical side, the program is extremely well produced, with clear picture quality and superb editing. Having watched this process first hand, I can assure you that professionals were involved in every step of the production here. The program lives up to its title in terms of concisely presenting a range of finishing and weathering techniques. Don’t expect to see any discussion of assembly. In fact, the program begins with a fully assembled and painted tank. That said, the program covers a wide range of techniques from filter and pin washes, to chipping, rust and fuel stains and painting wooden tools, among others. The DVD provides a very functional chapter listing as well as an index of specific techniques so viewers can easily access whatever portions of the program they want to revisit. Between the main program and the additional features, there is around 95 minutes worth of top-notch modeling presented.

All in all I think this is a tremendous product and well worth the purchase price. I think there is something here for almost any modeler of military hardware. The DVD is available through Casemate Publishing and they have posted previews on their website (www.casematepublishing.com).

Highly recommended.
