Overview: Having read both of Mr. Windrow's excellent books on terrain modeling, I was very eager to review this new, step by step DVD.

The DVD comes in a standard case with nice, color artwork, and an index listing features on the back of the DVD. Total runtime is approximately 90 minutes.

DVD special feature include:
  • Profile of Richard Windrow
  • Model Panorama
  • Correcting common mistakes
  • List of recommended products
From the main menu one can watch the entire presentation (56 minutes total runtime), select from the chapters index, or watch the special features the DVD.

The main feature of the DVD is a step by step "build" of terrain modeling. It is broken down into different "projects." Each starts with the basic compositional elements of an effective scene, and then Mr. Windrow shows each technique, which culminates with the completion of that scene.

This DVD is targeted at the beginning to intermediate modeler, and Mr. Windrow does a very good job of explaining each technique as he progresses step by step. Each step is clearly explained and shown in real time as the technique is carried out. This is one great advantage that video has over book format. The DVD will be especially of interest to figure modelers, as it details the building of groundwork, rocks, grasses, etc.

Of interest to AFV modelers will be the sections on battle damaged buildings, the making of bricks and debris fields, the construction of walls and buildings from scratch, and the incorporation of armored vehicles into a setting with these elements.

Conclusion: This is a great DVD, and is a "must have" for any figure, AFV, or aircraft modeler who wishes to incorporate realistic groundwork effects into their craft. The video and sound quality of the DVD is very good, as is the camera work.

I would highly recommend this DVD to IPMS model clubs/chapters. It could be used right along with the "ABCs of Modeling" program for new members. It is sure to impart good, useful techniques and information, and also inspire those with an interest in improving their modeling.

My thanks to Tara Lichterman, Casemate Publishing, Compendium Films, and IPMS/USA for the review sample.
