Do you have boxes, or stacks, of back issues of your favorite modeling magazines that you are saving for “reference” or “just in case I need to look something up”? Me, too. The problem always seems to be that I don’t know which issue I am seeking and, therefore, spend a huge amount of time leafing through each back issue to see if it might hold the article that I think I remember. By the time I find the right piece, I am usually worn out or, worse yet, distracted with some other idea that I have stumbled upon. The solution to this situation may be at hand from RMW Enterprises. With the permission of FineScale Modeler Magazine, RMW has created this searchable CD database of FSM back issues from the Spring 1982 issue to December 2006. After installing the software (hint – use their Javascripts, none of my existing versions seemed to make it go), you can type in the general description of what you are looking for. The program then searches for images lists all the related magazine articles with the illustration. If this appears to be the article you were seeking, you have an exact reference to go directly to the issue in question and read up. Please note that Indy shows you the first page of the article that matches the text that you were searching for, not the entire article. If there is a drawback to this wonder of technology, it is that I still have to dig through my boxes looking at each issue to see if it is the one specified by the database. “Let’s see, did I pile these by year or by cover subject?” Of course, if I had the magazines filed in any order, I wouldn’t have this difficulty. But, at least I know what I am looking for this time! Indy is only available for the Microsoft Windows and the Macintosh OS X families of operating systems at this time.
