MSRP: $45.00 ISBN: 81-7062-284-0 Provided by Casemate Publishing: www.casematepublishing.com When I was offered the chance to review Infantry: A Glint of the Bayonet, I thought from the title that this was a history of the infantry arm, or perhaps a more focused study of the rifle and the attached blade. That is not the case. The book is a coffee table or visual reference type book of the Indian Army's infantry branch. Before reading this book, I guess I hadn't given much thought to the traditions and performance of Indian Army regiments. Although not a comprehensive history, there are interesting segments on pre-independence battle honors while still part of the British Empire as well as the various campaigns since 1947. Following the British traditions, each of the several regiments has its own distinctive uniforms, shown in color photos and sketches. There are paras, mechanized units, Punjabs, Madras, Grenadiers, Rajputs, Jats, Sikhs, Gurkas and many more. The information from the book's sell sheet says: In hail, sleet, snow and pouring rain, the Indian infantryman maintains a silent vigil ever the nation's frontiers. For over fifty years ever since Independence, he has never once lowered his guard be it on the Line of Control on the tree-covered high altitude ridgelines in Jammu and Kashmir the Actual Ground Position Line, at the icy mountaintops of Siachen Glacier, at the Line of Actual Control or the high Himalayas bordering the Tibetan Plateau. If you want to know more about these frequently overlooked subjects, I recommend this book to fellow modelers.
