Space the final frontier.  A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…  I can’t do that Hal.  Danger, Will Robinson!

If you can identify the movies and shows that these quotes belong to chances are you will like this book.  Author Richard Marmo, IPMS/USA member #2, covers all aspects of sci-fi modeling, from your basic off the shelf kit to an elaborate lighted limited edition resin offering.  There is something in here for all types of modeler.  The techniques that are shown are easily adapted to armor or aircraft.  The weathering techniques are very informative and effective.  You are taken on a tour of thirteen models that cover TV series to movies.  While the cover shows two Star Wars kits this is not the only thing covered.  Mr. Marmo covers starships (Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 and then some), UFOs, Landing Assault craft (Aliens), and just about everything in between.  The book explores the tools, techniques and procedures for producing some fantastic models.

You are taken on a step by step construction of the thirteen models.  Besides the building of the actual models, the author shows hints, tips and techniques for producing realistic diorama bases.  These range from a basic kit supplied base to an elaborate lighted base with buildings, as well as, a crashed Area 51 diorama.  Advance techniques such as lighting your models are included and are explained in simple easy to understand instructions.

What I’m trying to say is that there is something in here for everyone.  Don’t get hung up on it being a “Sci-Fi” book.  A model is a model and there is something to glean from each article in this book.  If you are a Sci-Fi modeler this book is a must for you.  The amount of information is invaluable, especially if you have these kits and were just waiting for some additional motivation.  Well your motivation has arrived.

I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who likes sci-fi movies.  I would like to thank Specialty Press for the review copy.  You can order the book by calling Specialty Press by calling 1-800-895-4585 or by visiting www.specialtypress.com.  A $4.95 shipping and handling fee is added to each order
