New from Still Motions Photographics and Ray Bean is Volume Four in his “Super Carrier” series of one the most famous-named ships in history.   This is Ray’s first double photo CD, with 133 JPEG images numbered in sequential order for easy navigating using the provided index.  My sample arrived in a single CD jewel case, but Ray assures me all production copies will be mailed in double CD jewel cases.

Until now, the only modeler’s reference source for the Enterprise has been the Detail and Scale book which is now badly outdated.  While a lot of the material is still useful in the D&S book, this photo CD picks up photographically where the book leaves off, with excellent up to date and classic photos of this famous ship.

All photos are good to excellent quality.  I especially like the Enterprise “beehive” shots because those are hard to find.  Some of the older beehive shots were a little blurry but still useable for reference.  A very nice touch is the inclusion of well-lit hanger deck images, which go a long way to help the modeler detail and scratch build a hangar deck for the modern Enterprise.  The CD also includes lots of images showing the underside details of most of the flight deck overhangs, which serious Enterprise buffs, will certainly appreciate.  There are several very nice images of the stern boat dock as well as a smattering of aircraft photos.  I know it wasn’t Ray’s intention, but you get to see dockside equipment in some of the shots as well as deck equipment, so diorama buffs should be pleased.  My sample didn’t include numbers for the images on disk 2; captions only.  Also, one photo wouldn’t open for whatever reason.

Conclusions:

This is the best photo CD yet from Still Motions Photographics.  I have almost no problems with any of the photos and there is no exterior part of the ship that isn’t covered photographically.  A few shots get blurry around the edges but all photos are still useable.  Between this photo CD and the D&S book, the modeler now has all the reference material required to construct a truly great model of the most famous named ship in American history.  The down side (sort of) was the lack of numbers on the images on disk two and the one photo that would not open.  I contacted Ray and he assured me he would correct the numbering problem on production copies and check into the photo that would not open for me.

The double CD retails for $24.95 (postage included) in the Continental US and slightly higher for overseas orders (email or write for exact overseas rate).
