MSRP: $15.00 USD As Monty Python said once, “And now for something
completely different”. This is wooden wing flap set is really
something different.
Towards the end of WW II, the Luftwaffe were looking at a means to
employ more contractors into the war effort and relieve the overstressed
metal fabricators. A means to do this was to manufacture more and
more wooden parts. One such approach was to replace the aluminum
wing flaps with units made of wood.
These replacement parts compared favorably with the original ones and
were used to a limited degree. Two such aircraft to employ these
wooden flaps were FW-190D-9 “Red 13” of JV44 and the famous FW-190D-9
“Yellow 10”.
Eagle Editions has reproduced these wooden flaps exactly as the real
aircraft looked. The flaps have three hinge points and also show the
indicator showing the degree of flap angle. Due to the small size
that the numbers would need to be in this scale, decals could not be
produced small enough. I’m sure that using some 1/144 numbers, this
might be employed for more accuracy.
The flaps are just one piece for each flap with a very simple cleanup
required as the casting tab is very thin and may be snapped off with a
slight scoring on the proper line.
After I removed the casting tab, I primed the flap with a grey primer
and then painted the underside with RLM 76. The inside of the flap
should be shown as the red plywood that has been varnished. Once the
paint had dried and the decal applied the flaps were complete. All
that was needed is mounting them on the aircraft.
I found this to be a unique alternative to the standard flap and I
thank Jerry Crandall and Eagle Editions for producing them.
I would like to thank them and John Noack for providing the Flaps for
me to review. I would highly recommend them as a slightly different
way of showing the FW-190D-9. I’m sure that once displayed, they
will raise many questions as to accuracy, however they are 100% on the
spot. |
