My thanks to Mario Bartoli of Mondoridotto for this review set.

Mondoridotto (small world) is a new Italian company on the modeling scene that if you have not heard of you may want to take notice.  Fresh on the heels of the Italeri re-release of the ESCI Aeritalia G.91R “Gina”, this new mail order hobby shop has released its own resin detail set for the Gina.  This is an impressive first offering that goes a long way to improve an already decent kit of this bantam fighter.

The Gina detail set is comprehensive and covers a lot of details that you would find in multiple details set by other manufacturers.  Here, the detail is all included in one set.  The set that I received was cast in smooth, durable gray resin with crisp detail, and no imperfections or flash (In fact the gray matches the color of the Italeri plastic).  Provided in the set:
  • Complete cockpit tub
  • Ejection seat with belts
  • Aft bulkhead for the area behind the ejection seat
  • Instrument panel with recessed detail
  • Nose wheel well
  • Main wheel well and speed brake well
  • Bulged main tires
  • Bulged nose tire
  • Dropped flaps
  • Replacement nose (for the Italian Aerial Demonstration Team plane)

To aid in the placement of these details is a comprehensive four-page instruction sheet with photos, diagrams and color call outs.

Like most ESCI kits, the cockpit is Spartan at best, the solution for the kit is here.  The Small World cockpit tub is a single piece with nice console and back wall detail; all you need to do is make is a throttle handle for styrene rod.  In this goes a superb ejection seat, equal in quality to those offered by other companies.  The kit instrument panel is also crisply cast and has nice gauge holes for decals (not provided) – it is a far cry from the smooth plastic in the kit.  The cockpit is a perfectly tight fit.  The only kit parts required are the control stick and the upper part of the intake cut from the kit cockpit floor and glued to forward end of the tub.  Check the specified distance in the instructions, step A calls for a cut at 10mm and it should be more like 30mm.  The only detail I would have liked to see - fuselage sidewalls above the console, but these are easily replicated in this small plane.

While the kit wheel wells are sufficiently detailed to pass, the replacements are clearly a notch above.  Patterned from the kit wells and therefore drop-in replacements (dry-fitting confirmed this), they offer far more detail in the form of cabling, hydraulic lines, hoses and rivet detail.  The wells also correct the incorrect bulkhead locations of the kit wells.  There is now the missing bulkhead between the speed brakes and the wheel well is open across the width of the plane as it should be.
As for the other details - The tires are very nice as well, but perhaps a bit too flattened.  The separate flaps, while not a necessity, are a nice added feature since many Ginas sat with their flaps dropped; saving the modeler extra work.  Lastly it took me a while to identify the purpose for the new nose cone but it is a replacement nose for the acrobatics version of G.91 flown at the time by the Frecce Tri-color aerial demonstration team.  The aerobatics team did not need the use or the weight of the recon equipment in the nose.  The new nose cone is pictured on the right.
All in all this is a very nice detail set at an affordable price for so much detail.  Without any other effort, this set will really dress up your G.91 model.  You can order it direct from Mondoridotto.  Highly recommended.
