During WWII, as the war in the Atlantic progressed, the German U-boat fleet suffered vastly increasing losses and many of these were due to attacks from aircraft from both the American and British side.  To counteract the air threat, increased radar was installed and many attempts were made to increase the firepower available to repel attacking aircraft.  One of the methods tried was to add a proven Flak gun forward of the conning tower to cover the front half of the boat.  This modification was called Turm VI and included a stand mounted in up off the deck with a Flak gun.  This very interesting conversion is covered by Nautilus Models with the Flak gun being a quadruple 2cm 38/43 U with shield and all the associated decking.  For a great picture of the platform and gun, check here: http://www.uboat.net/technical/flak.htm under the picture of U673.

This set consists of the forward platform found on the Turm VI conversions (U-675 & similar) along with all the parts to produce the gun.  It is 26 resin parts and there is some scratch building is required.  20 of the firm gray resin parts comprise the gun itself.  The remainder of the parts makes up the deck and ammo box.  All the parts have minimal flash and are very well cast.  The handrails around the deck are to be scratch built.

Instructions indicate right up front this is for the advanced modeler.  This set also requires either the Revell 5045 kit or the Nautilus 72-001/72-901 kit to complete the model.  The instructions are 10 steps long, very well detailed and have excellent drawings to indicate location of parts and the entire platform.

This is a very nice modification and I am sure the U-boat crowd out these will love it!  Detail, casting and instructions are excellent.  I would also say that this would not make a bad first resin project.  There is some effort that would be required into building the rails and that is the only difficult part of the entire conversion.  I recommend this set to medium to advance modelers who want a very unique version of the subject.  Thanks go to Jim Corley and Nautilus Models for the great review sample.
