For whatever reason, the Soviets in World War II had an affinity for machine guns on wheels. Probably due to weight, a pair of poor saps had to roll those bad boys all over the battlefield. "Comrade, pass the ibuprofen!"

Although they appear to have been ubiquitous, per photos of the Eastern Front, they aren't represented well in 1/35th scale. Tamiya had a generic-looking one in their Jurassic period Gaz jeep set and they also included a wheeled Dushka in the Chtz turret T-34.

Tahk (Tank Model) has filled that void with a half dozen variations of the Soviet wheeled Maxims. Let's hoist a vodka to our brethren in Russia!

The molding on this example is sharp. My knowledge is limited to judging this weapon against the old "If it looks like duck...walks like a duck...." standard. If the definitive reference on Maxim MGs has been written, Kip doesn't own it.

So getting any semblance of expertise out of the way first, I can safely say this looks the part and then some. The more than half dozen resin parts are nicely molded. However the instructions are a little sparse - consisting of an exploded drawing.

My biggest issue with this little kit was fit. It was rough. The basic gun carriage parts were slightly warped and that made everything katterwhompus and a little more difficult. Add to that no real positive locks for parts fitting and patience becomes as important as super glue.

That being said, the completed kit is very dainty and neat looking. Careful painting and dry brushing will bring this piece to life. Tahk also included two ammo canisters that are very well detailed and may be the only ones of their kind on the market.

It's here, it's neat and is a must-have for any Ivanophile.

Thanks to Tank Models for this review sample.
