Many kits of the infamous Titanic have been released over the years. But this one may be among the best in the smaller 1/720 scale. The kit consists of three parts trees, two in white and one in tan, all packaged separately. The hull, molded in black, is also in it’s own bag. Also included is a black plastic display stand and name plate. All of the parts are crisply molded with no flash. The deck parts are molded in the tan color which will aid in painting some. And the planking detail on the deck and the hull is very delicate and sharp. Some of the sprue gates on the tan parts are a bit on the heavy side, especially on the smoke stacks. The planking detail on the deck and hull are very delicate and sharp. The instructions are broken down in to six steps with exploded views. In being so few steps, the parts numbers and location details are somewhat jumbled and can be confusing. All of the parts that are to be painted white have an asterisk over them and all the other parts have the color number above them. This simplifies the painting a bit. Included is some thread to build the four wire antenna array between the masts. Step six has the measurements for the thread parts to be cut. This detail is a must for a well modeled Titanic. The decals sheet is simple with three name plates and three flags.

Of note is that the photos on the box sides of the built up model do not have the white on the very top of the hull. The real one did, and the instructions do indicate the white areas. Interesting that the sample photos would have such a glaring error. Another nice addition would have been a waterline hull option or instructions on how and where to cut the full hull.

Academy has produced a very highly detailed model kit of the Titanic. It would be helpful if you have even some experience in building smaller scale ships. But even the first-timer could build a very nice model. This is a very nice addition to the ever growing line up of great models from Academy.

Thank you to Academy and John Noack for the sample.
