Chances are if you have been modeling for a while and got involved with resin detail parts or kits, you have a Dremel tool (I have three!). As long as I can remember, the basic shape of the Dremel hasn't changed… until now.

The Stylus is well named, having a completely different shape than the old tools. The Stylus comes with a pistol grip and can be held like a traditional Dremel or more like a gun. The grip was designed to be ergonomic for those long projects and is very comfortable to hold onto while in operation. There is a variable speed dial on the back with settings from 1-10 that correspond to 5,000-25,000 rpm. There is also a charging station that can be kept on the desktop and has a holder for the attachments. Perhaps the biggest change is the power cell- a 7.2V integrated lithium ion battery that holds a charge 6 times longer than Ni-Cd. The battery has no memory, so there isn't any reduction in the charge capacity. In fact, Dremel says that Tool will hold a charge for up to 2 years (Editor's note: At the rate I am completing projects these days, that's probably the best feature!)

The instruction manual is very complete with instructions on use of the Stylus, listings of a myriad of accessories and maintenance of the tool. The front accepts all Dremel attachments and collets and the set comes with a very nice selection of grinding and polishing tools.

I tried it out on two quick projects and ran into a problem. For some reason, the Dremel wouldn't stay on but everything appeared normal. I called Dremel (a division of Bosch Tool) and explained my situation that it was a review item and a free donation. The customer service lady, Jill, didn't care and was concerned about getting the defective tool back and getting me a new one that took less than a week. The customer service was extraordinary - another selling point. Back to the projects - I thinned out the flooding holes on another sub and then worked on the seams lines to a resin figure kit - the thing worked flawlessly!

I highly recommend this to anyone that needs a new Dremel or is replacing an old pal. The cordless design, the quality, and the customer service are excellent. I have stowed my other Dremels and this will be on my bench every day.
