The Box

This photo-etch Eduard product arrived in a plastic sleeve envelope with a set of printed instructions and a white cardboard stiffener insert. The stiffener prevents any serious damage to the photo-etch and my sample arrived in mint condition.

The Part

There are four different types of stitching represented in this product. The stitches vary as the nature of the material that would be stitched together. Stitch patterns 1 and 2 are very similar and both appear to represent a stitch that would represent a cloth and cloth seam. Part 1 provides, as a single piece, both sides of the stitch line. Just remove part 1 from the p.e. carrier frame and apply it directly to the model. Part 2 comes in a right/left side that is entirely separated from each other. The modeler will need, therefore, to align the photo-etch parts on the model equidistant from each other along the length of the seam. Part 3 represents the stitching that runs along a seam formed between a cloth surface and a metal surface. Part 4 is the thinnest of the stitch patterns and can be used to represent stitching that is found along the edges of the wings and control surfaces, or anywhere else a linear, smaller pattern is desired.

The Instructions

The instructions consist of a single sheet of paper, printed front and back. Each of the different types of stitching are identified in clear drawings. A generic drawing of an airframe that resembles a Nieuport aids the modeler in potential placement of the Eduard stitches.

Conclusion

This product is not meant to be placed on any one specific airframe and can be applied to any 1/32 aircraft by any manufacturer. The modeler is advised to collect detailed reference images of the subject as it is important to know the composition of the various surfaces on real aircraft so that the proper stitch pattern can be applied.

Eduard photo-etch parts can be cut from the carrier frame with a rounded Xacto blade or a safety razor. Eduard parts accept primer and paint well, and can be attached with CA or other adhesive. My small test shot for this review was painted with acrylic Tamiya paint and attached to a plastic test surface using Gator Grip Glue.

  • Part 1: 6 pieces by 5 inches each for a total of 30 inches material.
  • Part 2: 4 pieces by 5 inches each for a total of 20 inches of material, but since the parts must be glued together the modeler has 10 inches of "seam" that can be stitched with Part 2.
  • Part 3: 8 pieces by 5 inches each for a total of 40 inches of material.
  • Part 4: 5 pieces by 5 inches each for a total of 25 inches of material.

Just a small note to the 1/32 and 1/48 builders, it is possible to cut Part #4 into lengths that could be used as turnbuckles.

Recommendation

The quality of the product is superior. References will be significant for proper placement and use depending on the aircraft being modeled. My thanks to the fine people at Eduard for the chance to review this set.
