This is the rope bumper designed to protect the boat from damage when docking. This rope bumper is a major item seen in the period photos of the boat. Its absence in the kit is very obvious. Lion Roar has come to the rescue with this resin representation of the missing rope bumper. The casting is excellent and without any blemishes like air bubbles or voids. There are small casting blocks to be removed, but they are located at the ends where they mate up to form the complete bumper. Each piece is numbered so make sure that you have each piece identified before you cut off the casting blocks. The bumpers have a woven texture that improves with painting. In constructing the bumper I first removed the casting blocks then drilled a small hole in the end of each piece. This was to allow me to glue a brass rod into the end of one piece and then glue that piece into the next piece. This will give additional strength to the whole unit. Because the ends at the stern of the boat don’t meet the unit is flexible enough to slide it into place. The tie ropes match the holding locations on the boat very well. You need to be careful about the resin tie ropes on the bumper; they can be broken off if you are ham-handed in your handling of the piece. After gluing the bumper together using the brass pins, the piece was primed with Testor’s Primer. It was then painted using Tamiya XF 60 dark yellow. After that was dry, I used a MIG dark wash to put some shadows in the recesses of the rope texture. Once the wash was dry, I dry-brushed the upper portion with light grey to simulate the graying of the rope. This bumper is designed to sit just below the gunnel line and if you desire to fit them level with the gunnel, some substantial trimming will be required. Conclusion – This set adds the missing detail that is so obvious in period photos. It will take your Hobby Boss model a step above the rest. References known to me:
