Cool things come in small packages…at least in the case of Moebius' diminutive 1/128 Flying Sub from Irwin Allen's The Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (VTTBOTS). Packaged with companion Diving Bell and Mini Sub models, the Flying Sub is a great little kit for beginners or for advanced modelers requiring therapy for their AMS (Advanced Modelers' Syndrome).

[review image] The set consists of 26 parts between all 3 kits. Panel lines are recessed on all, and fit is good - requiring virtually no filler. The Flying Sub comes with a color die-cut cardstock cockpit. Although toy-like upon first inspection, it really works to good effect once the hull/fuselage halves are buttoned up. The Diving Bell and Mini Sub have no interior detail, but do have their own static cradles. No landing gear is included for the Flying Sub, but Moebius does include an attractive clear display stand which poses the vehicle in flight.

Given the low parts count, instructions are simple and printed on the back of the full-color box. They are sufficient for assembly, but call out incorrect colors - namely black trim. According to actual footage from the TV show and photos of the studio model, the trim on the fins and upper/lower ring areas should be blue. For my rendition, I chose Model Master Acryl French Blue over Chrome Yellow. A couple of layers of Pledge with Future Shine provided the final sheen.

Much to my pleasure, no decals are required for this kit - whoo hoo!!

I figure no more than 10 hours - including the research -- were invested among all 3 models during this build

A fast, clean, affordable, and fun build of a somewhat obscure subject - what a great way to break out of a modeling rut and rediscover the child-like joy of the hobby! Also a great way to share or introduce the hobby to a youngster.

Strongly recommend this kit to anyone looking for an easy kit for therapeutic purposes or for a good beginner's kit…and to all VTTBOTS fans out there (come on…you guys know who you are…admit it).

Thanks to the good folks at Moebius for the sample to review!
